Ofcourse you still have to consider slight changes from batch to batch . If you start with a slight reduction from the recommended loads and work from there then it would be no problem as the gun tells you when the pressure is getting too high.

WebFeb 18, 2014 · It looks like IMR 4198 will give a conservative pressure at 1,600 fps, since it has a lower burn rate than IMR 4227. I will start low and add powder until I get 1,600 fps. IMR 4198 used to be my main powder for the 32-20, but it was always for velocities closer to the original BP velocities. WebApr 13, 2014 · Here, a fast burning powder makes the most out of limited capacity. Hodgdon lists .243 loads for 4198 with light, varmint type bullets. I think 4198 could be used with the heavier slugs but velocity and perhaps accuracy would suffer compared to a larger quantity of slower powder. I use 4198 in my .30-30 with lead bullets and it does great.

WebJan 21, 2024 · There is a slight difference between the two powders on burn rate and one requires about 2-4 grains less powder on max loads. The web site is free and carries load data for all of the Hodgdon powders which are many. IMR-4198 is the powder I use in my 45-70 loads for best accuracy.

And since most competitors using H-4198 in .30 BR are already using compressed charges, going to IMR-4198 means a comparable charge probably isn't going to fit in the case.
