I got very lucky, spawning right next to a lava pool, and i got in (to nether) without ANY iron tool besides my bucket (my only 3 iron) and 2 cooked salmon. I used lava and wood to ignite the portal and it spawns me in a soul sand valley. Got mauled pretty bad.

Kill a ghast, a blaze, and a wither skeleton, and put them together in your inventory crafting to make a fire charge. Remember it's only one use, so be careful when you light your portal. As a last resort, you could take the nether fortress loot chests and place them next to your portal.
