This concoction is the protective barrier that locks in water, preventing evaporation and eventual dryness of the hair and scalp. Sebum also protects the scalp from bacterial infections. Relative to keratinocytes that make up the hair follicle, sebaceous glands are composed of huge cells with many large vesicles that contain the sebum.
